gaogaigar and its sequel OVA gaogaigar FINAL live very firmly at the dawn of digipaint and the dusk of cel animation and it's fun to see happen, i think? the original GGG's '97-'98 run is almost entirely cel-with-effects with the stark exception of Mic Sounders' transformation, and FINAL ('00-'03) starts as practically all lovely cel work but with digipaint slowly working its way in? i think the last time i noticed cel animation outside the odd stock sequence in FINAL was after GaoFighGar was trashed for keeps, but it's all a very gradual kinda transition and when the show finally settles on being all digipaint it still looks about as strong as ever, if not better. i still think Genesic GaoGaiGar's Final Fusion is some of the most beautiful cool robot combination committed to the screen

still giant robot fans, still pmd: explorers enthusiasts. imagine we are wearing a big button that says "ask us about Void Stranger". you should play all the games we like right now. the media backlog continues to grow ever further, and finally fucking continuing Initial D slips further and further out of reach.....
and UGH i SO DEARLY WISH i could recommend GaoGaiGar to literally everybody without reservation!!!! i firmly believe it's just out and out some of the Best and Most Fun you can get with giant robots, it's such an absolutely wonderful watch. Gai Shishioh is absolutely one of my top anime men - he's hot and i'm love (and also he's Link Ocarinaoftime and Shiro Gundam08thmsteam! that's gotta count for something!!). it's just so fully embracing of being Hot Blooded and Being Badass and Trusting Others.
... but unfortunately, it is also incredibly laden with rapid flashing to the point where it's straining even for me (generally not particularly photosensitive). watching GaoGaiGar is also a very good reminder why regulations on strobing were tightened. ever since watching it i have come to appreciate dimming in anime. if you are safe enough taking it, i still do absolutely wholeheartedly recommend it!!!! just... stay safe, also
i'll do the tank mode someday but for now? Goldymarg is very cool. articulation a little compromised by the way things work but i don't mind, and this thing comes with extra support pieces in Marg Hand/Goldion Hammer mode for a REASON (he too heavy for the got dang upper arm!!) but man. what a statement. it is still wonderful, totally recommend.
this was a good build. Gai Shishioh is a total fuckin hottie and i am deeply disappointed the RG GaoGaiGar didnt include a 1/144 Gai. but that's okay - outside of the incredibly fragile fully posable hands of the full Super Mechanoid himself he is an absolute DARLING. wins MY vote for God of Destruction of the Year!
really the rg gaogaigar perfectly fits the show: lovingly crafted, absolutely incredible and so so incredibly worth it if you can get past one glaring issue (whether it be "frequent use of eye-straining flashing" or "hands that hate to stay together if you push them funny")
