EDIT: finally! it is tomorrow! its the day!!!!!
i am SO EXCITED i love these games so much. rambly primer if youve never experienced this series before below
for those of you who don't already know Mega Man Battle Network, somehow: it's like if you took a turn-of-the-millennium vision of a Net-connected world and added funny little computer guys that fight virus monsters to it. a boy and his internet navigation AI/brother keep getting tied up in the many dealings of secret organizations, apocalypse plots and the internet mafia as he tries to do normal kid things like "get to school on time", "visit Dad at work", "hit the beach with friends" and "hang out at online message boards". the resulting misadventures span from helping mom put out an oven fire to registering for cool tournaments to prove you're the best to trying to keep power running to the operating room a friend is currently undergoing a lifesaving surgery in to THE DARK GODS OF THE INTERNET HAVE RISEN FROM THEIR SLUMBER.
the gameplay's an isometric rpg split between the real world and the internet, with lots of access points around the real to hook up to the net - or even to the isolated systems in just about anything more electrically complex than a light switch. battles take place in a more side-view environment, focused on carefully selecting from a hand of attacks drawn from your deck of "Battle Chips" at the start of your turn, then switching to a real-time mode where you have to maneuver in a 6x3 field of panels and trade blows with the viruses and other guys' net navigators, using the attacks you selected once each and then falling back on your weak but reliable Mega Buster until the "Custom Gauge" fills up and you can select more attacks from your hand.
combat can be surprisingly deep, especially from 2 onward when the series finally finally gets solid footing on where it's headed mechanically and begins experimenting with new layers to combat and customization. growing stronger outside of gaining more chip attacks is based more on exploration and finding the HP upgrades and customization parts out in the wild or in shops, giving a solid incentive to poke your nose wherever you spot items.
if youve ever been curious, i'd say give it a shot! the Legacy Collection is probably the best way to experience most of these games thanks to most of the readded content cut from localized versions, and the online multiplayer battling and trading is a neat addition even if it isn't crossplay.
