hi hello i post dog. this guy, specifically:
![]()
he loves you, and hopes you love yourself too. i want him to be a candle in the dark, i.e. not really doing much, sure, but still there. something to hold onto if you need it.
so many people on this site don't use alt text at all! It's really frustrating
I try to caption my images with enough information that any alt-text will be redundant, though I admit I don't have a great intuition about how much information is useful to begin with
i'm not sure what you're saying -- captions and alt text are the same thing here. just describing what's in the image is good! who's in it, what do they look like, where are they? stuff like that.
Well i think of alt-text specifically as metadata tied to the image in general, vs., say, post tags or the title or the text contents of a post.
As in the text accompanying the post is "Tiny has presented me with a piece of plastic from a snack container. In a moment she will meow at me to throw it down the hall so she can chase it", where there isn't anything else that I would think could usefully describe the image
ok! post tags and content aren't relevant to the accessibility of images and their captions/alt tags. folks who are using assistive technology or pulling up images are looking for that text in the expected place. but it sounds like you could just copy and paste your caption text into the alt text area and solve both things!
OK that does answer my (implied) question of whether or not it's useful to actually include alt-text if it's mostly just a duplicate of text content already in an image's post, thanks!
Are you sure about that? “Don’t duplicate your caption in the alt text” is pretty common accessibility advice: screenreader users don’t want to hear the exact same thing twice either.
yes, ideally someone puts alt text where alt text is supposed to go! that way it shows up the right way when the image is clicked on and expanded, etc. (not everyone who relies on it is using a screen reader, either.)
Went back and captioned what I posted today; it's really tough to get that small box typed in properly when phone posting and I get lazy about it. Thanks for the reminder to do better.
that's awesome to hear! also, yes, the interface for it here is pretty bad. i'm hopeful they'll change that in the near future??
yes i love this!!! i love your pictures of bueller. my favorite was bueller not being impressed by europe
i try my best but usually when i post him it's like. right before i sleep, or eat, or something I'm not on this website for long periods of time so it's difficult to remember that relatively time consuming activity yk i should go back and caption all of it eventually
yeah, i totally get it. the basics with bueller will be the same -- he's always a black and white australian shepherd dog etc. so you can copy and paste at least some of it. also, please don't feel the burden of having to go backward and update everything. just doing it starting now is great!
it's not a burden!! it's making more bueller available to more people, the main thing i try to do every day
