or at least, my favorite music evokes this. music by different artists often focus on different things. autechre is about turning music into locations and spaces (and they have such immense reverbs—the music “takes place” inside of vast concrete bunkers and rooms made out of reverbant metal). SOPHIE is about music as material (hence she makes music whose sounds “come from” plastic, metal, rubber, etc. she makes squelches and squeals because thats how the Material sounds). bull of heaven is music as a painting. an instantaneous narrative which stretches onto infinity.
(of course artists arent locked into just One thing but this is what it seems like they like to focus on).
my favorite stuff though is all about motion. how does the song work when represented as movement?
most edm genres are all about Movement (why else are they called drops). most of my favorite arcaea charts are also about the way arcs move (contrast with charts that are about timing, speed, dexterity, etc)
trap 808 kicks are horizontal pulses of motion. hardcore kicks are bouncy, like a pinball bumper. dubstep growls, depending on the type, might be full of friction—they sounds like how it feels to spin a stepper motor. or they’re flicks of sound, shooting the noise off into space. trance is long and flowing motions, no sharp turns. etc etc
listen to angel’s salad and you might see what i am talking about. its about motion (photosensitivity warning for the music video—contains a lot of flashing) https://youtube.com/watch?v=Acn-Jri-tr4
