HARRY OMG OKAY
-- the best way to enjoy baseball is to root for guys. be like "oh that guy he seems fun let me learn about him and see when he does cool stuff."
-- on the Cardinals, the hitter Paul Goldschmidt is one of the best modern hitters, he's like 48% better than the average player rn; Lars Nootbar is a middling player who for complicated reasons is among the top five most popular athletes in Japan right now. you can yell "NOOOOOT" every time he comes up to plate and you'll be in the in-crowd. Nolan Gorman is a new name to be, but he's having an amazing season? also they have this starting pitcher named Adam Wainwright who's 41, which is ancient in baseball years, so yelling at him like "welcome to london old man!!" would be cool. also their catcher, Willson Contreras used to be a Cub and then isn't anymore and he has an attitude about it, it's good beef.
-- on the Cubs, i have dear feelings for all of them from what i've learned from Nicky. you're gonna be definitely watching Seiya Suzuki, an international siigning who had a bad year last year but is hitting some of the best on the team this year. if you see Patrick Wisdom make a good hit or play you can say "certified patrick wisdom moment." Marcus Stroman is their ace starting pitcher, he'll probably pitch, if he doesn't i'll be surprised, so watch him to watch a guy do really well (or fail miserably). Dansby Swanson is their best hitter/outfielder, so watch him to see some cool plays in the outfield.
-- if you gotta pick a team, pick the Cubs. fuck the Cardinals.
-- pace your attention and talk about it. you don't have to stick your eyes to every single pitch at the start of the game; baseball games are long! don't be afraid to take a half-inning off to walk around the concourse and grab some food. but if you're going with someone, talk about them with the game and what's going on. if you're going alone, try to make friends with some fans around you and chat with them as ago. if you're watching with someone it's so easy to pay attention for longer. (also having snacks will help with attention because it's something to do, especially food you gotta do stuff for (shelled peanuts)) let your eyes wander to the other players in the field, or to the dugouts, rather than just the pitcher and batter. does the outfielder do a funny dance? does the shortstop shake his ass in a cool way? any time you hear the crack of a bat on a ball, snap to attention and see what's happening, but the more you follow what's happening when the ball's not in play, the more meaningful the balls in play will be. just remember that the batter/pitcher relationship is an unstoppable force meeting an immoveable wall, and the tension is always there for you to tap into.
-- the sox/yankees game in london was a high-scoring game, so i'd expect a lot of runs. some people blamed that on the air in the olympic stadium, who knows. you can cheer for home runs, but don't forget that a well-turned double play is one of the best parts of baseball. look up like "best double plays mlb" to see some good ones and why they're good.
