I'm creating a chess variant and to test it, I need a way to play chess online with another player but without any engine dictating how we can move pieces. Essentially an online chess game with no rules engine attached. Any idea where i can find that?

On Lichess the "board editor" allows you to reposition pieces however you want. You can then copy/share a FEN code for the other player to paste into their own board editor. Would be a bit clunky. I think chess.com has something similar. However, what I do for playtesting my own chess variant is a board set up on a G*ogle Sheets spreadsheet doc. It works pretty well, updates more or less live each move.
ooooh the spreadsheet is a very nice idea! ive realised that the best way to do this is probably with tabletop sim or roll20, since i also need access to a deck of cards. which is a little more overhead than i'd like but i think that's the route i have to go.
