On Lichess the "board editor" allows you to reposition pieces however you want. You can then copy/share a FEN code for the other player to paste into their own board editor. Would be a bit clunky. I think chess.com has something similar. However, what I do for playtesting my own chess variant is a board set up on a G*ogle Sheets spreadsheet doc. It works pretty well, updates more or less live each move.

ooooh the spreadsheet is a very nice idea! ive realised that the best way to do this is probably with tabletop sim or roll20, since i also need access to a deck of cards. which is a little more overhead than i'd like but i think that's the route i have to go.
