Ready for the end.
Other links at my other site
See you, Space Eggbug
I don't mind joining a discord for access to something but I also realize I'm the spiders georg of discord users in that I will join literally any discord server that I see an invite link to, which means I have repeatedly hit the server limit.
not rhetorical: do kids making rom hacks these days actually not know about romhacking.net? i'm not hooked into the community aspect of it (i don't hack myself and i have a source for pre-patched). it seems pretty wild to think you could get into such a niche hobby and not even know about what i understand to be the online resource about it
it sucks for fan games (or really anything) to be distro'd this way, but i'm sure there's a lot of fud around using a file sharing site when there always seems to be a news story floating around about the latest shenanegans from the nintendo legal team vaporizing a project from orbit. most people don't realize or care that discord servers are probably easier to get destroyed by legal threat on top of being 1000x more susceptible to link rot
screenshotting this comment to remind me why i shouldn't be allowed online
While I'm sure the bits about literally not knowing about github, mediafire dropbox etc are hyperbole to make the logic of the bit work, I think it's important to remember that we're a number of years past when forums had their heyday. A lot of people just use the best tool they know of and there's nothing wrong with that, it just means education about better places to go and host is important, and shouldn't be treated as common knowledge
i'm just coming to grips with being an old man, i guess. i'm constantly bummed out to see The Web in the shambles it's in today, and seemingly little buy-in from future generations
I can kind of relate. Part of me thinks the lack of buy-in isn't necessarily from lack of interest and just from lack of knowledge, but generational gaps can kinda suck
in real life the discord requirements are just there to pump up the size of the discord and / or exert arbitrary power. they know about github. crystal clear is a clear example of such a romhack
I'm sure some people do it for clout or popularity, but I find it unlikely that ALL the romhacks/fangames distributed like this are done so for clout/popularity chasing reasons. At least, not intentionally, because a lot of people who primarily use discord have this idea that making and building up an insular community over increasingly niche things is the natural way of things. That's my experience, anyways
This is certainly true in some cases, but in the general case I think people just know Discord can be a convenient file host. It also closely ties the download link to the ability to seek help with patching or discuss the game and stops links to old versions of the game floating around.
There was a murder here, the part about not recognizing Mediafire, Github or even Dropbox teared me in half 🫠
i don't have a discord account and i don't think i can make one, last time i tried i spent hours waiting for it to load each time and it just kept looping the captcha over and over
I'll do my best to make a pastebin transcript later today. Would that work well?
https://pastebin.com/MCHJYiQb here's a pastebin link as promised, and https://pub.microbin.eu/upload/snail-fish-hawk here's a microbin link to download the raw file if pastebin isn't your thing.
absolutely incredible. I was trying to be sarcastic about how youtube-only links are just as bad as discord-only ones, but that's actually a really good transcript, thank you.
ahh lol, I can't do anything about youtube links that aren't mine but I just figured that the accessibility would be appreciated and all. Have a good one
