ok so. i have a morning routine that involves watching an episode of a tv show while i do some japanese flashcards for about 45 minutes. the problem is i have exhausted the tv shows ive been using. i like having shows that i feel ok only paying half attention to. i started with star trek enterprise (a bad show but perfect for this sorta thing), then barry (which turned out to be a bit too good for this sorta thing), but now i need something else. it does have to be in english so i dont have to pay as much attention to it/subtitles

anyone have any suggestions? star trek enterprise was like the exact caliber of thing i needed (vaguely interesting, 40 minute episodes, doesn't require me to focus on it. at least when the episodes were catastrophically bad i had something to complain about). im honestly considering rewatching tng like this but figure i'd solicit ideas first

edit: also i do prefer fiction/narrative stuff for this cause im trying to increase my "fiction intake"

i know succession will probably come up but i didnt enjoy that show so it's not an option sorry

We don't do much "wallpaper TV" but did go through some fits of it with BBC's "The Repair Shop" and "Grand Designs." These aren't plotted narrative shows so idk if it's actually in the lane of what you're looking for, though.

i think i was underselling how much attention i pay attention....like i dont NOT pay attention...i just might not be looking at the screen all the time....
i guess the real thing is "would i watch this otherwise?" and the answer is no, so this would be better than nothing

this is kinda a tangent that i might post about independently eventually since i think its interesting but ive done a LOT of discord groupwatches over the past 3 years and i feel so insanely burnt out on Scheduled Friendwatches. im slowly getting back into them with actively-releasing shows but hoo boy i really went too hard on that. i love being able to watch things on my own schedule ya know

oh this is my exact wheelhouse actually. I love background TV. here are some off the top of my head:

  • Xena, Warrior Princess: actually pretty good but formulaic enough that you don't lose anything by paying half attention
  • Mid-quality 90s/00s sitcoms, Frasier, NewsRadio, that sort of thing
  • Mystery shows with fun characters as long as you don't mind not being able to guess the mystery because you weren't totally paying attention. Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries, Agatha Christie's Poirot, and the first four seasons or so of Elementary are favorites of mine
  • Channel Zero is pretty fun if you like horror
  • Burn Notice is basically tailor made for this
