Nothing in real life approaches the feeling of cosmic horror like refactoring code you thought you understood only to realize it was only working for completely coincidental reasons and everything you thought you knew about why it actually worked was incorrect.

this has happened to me many times in code that web applications you have heard of and used :)
confused writings on walls about horrors beyond ken in videogames make a lot more sense once you start wanting to do them more as notes to your future self than anything else
