for context: wanikani is a spaced-repetition flashcard tool specifically for learning japanese characters and vocabulary. there are 60 levels, each level has about ~30 kanji and ~90 vocabulary words that you must memorize to advance to the next level.
it starts out with simple words, but by the final levels you are learning worrying academic terms and kanji that most japanese people might not know.

i first tried wanikani in august 2017. took several long breaks. with two level resets along the way. and in the beginning of 2022 i finally got into the groove and never stopped!! it absolutely has worked, i've found i can read the vast majority of kanji i encounter. and now that i dont need to consult dictionaries quite as much im able to focus on learning things like grammar! also knowing this many kanji is really springboarding my chinese learning, just as a fun side-effect

here are some graphs showing the progress from nihongostats.com that i think are cool

i have Thoughts about wanikani that ill probably write up eventually, but for now im just making a celebratory post because wanikani has no fanfare when you finish it, it just sorta is Done. which is weird. but ok

ive finished every level and unlocked every vocabulary item. but now it's time to Burn everything. see you in 6 more months!
