step 2: it's good for you to ask for what you need
step 3: it's allowed for you to ask for what you want
step 4: it's good for you to ask for what you want

"I have a right to ask friends for a modicum of help and emotional support."

I swear when social media suddenly picked up a toxic and wrong understanding of what "emotional labor" was it must have caused so much damage that we're still probably recovering from. I went a while without reaching out to any of my friends at all because I assumed I would just be exploiting a friend by doing so.

Then when I had to it was hard to tell which of my friends would actually be a friend about it and which would take a really shitty "I'm not your therapist" dismissive response to being asked to be a confidant even once.
