the later I leave after 5, the longer my commute back home is, and this is logarithmic. If I leave at 5 I generally get home around 530. If I leave at 530 I get home at...640. I stayed 30 minutes after because I arrived 30 minutes after I usually come, to make up for time, but this ended up extending my day an extra hour.

if there were a direct bus from my neighborhood to kirkland, I'd pay $500 a month for it, but one doesn't exist. If I wanted to take public transit that's 3 separate busses, with 3 waits, and it takes 1.5 hours to get there and 1.5 back, in optimal conditions.

I wonder if I can regularly arrive a little earlier and leave earlier, which would optimize both commutes. That would require getting out of bed 30 minutes earlier, and that would require timeshifting my bedtime, something incredibly difficult to pull off as it means losing another hour of free time in the evening, free time I'm taking advantage of due to the long commute. sigh

in reply to @hellojed's post:

i am hybrid remote actually, I am one of those freaks that likes going to the office to be around people, free snacks, nice coworkers, getting out of the house. that sorta thing. I can choose which days are remote pretty much at whim and nobody bats an eye, but I try to be in for days when there's a few in-person meetings. two times this week I did half home and half office days because the time difference made me lose a bunch of sleep and I didn't want to try to beat traffic while on 2 hours of sleep.

That's valid, I'm glad you enjoy your coworkers being and in the office :) I definitely get the appeal!

maybe will the lightrail expansion help? not sure if its along your commute. I wish we had better transit in the US
