During a fit of frustration I cut a bunch of things from the game I thought about fixing or adding, and then consolidated several other tasks, and checked of one yesterday I had been meaning to get to. There's 3 things left now. One of them is a bunch of smaller tasks about making cutscenes or dialog explaining in-game things. Another is adjusting a bunch of values that would change the difficulty of the game slightly. And another is a sort of persistent error the game has had for a while concerning a core game feature. I think lastly I have to disable a bunch of debug commands I have in the game. Then I get to do a build and hope nothing breaks and I complete the game. Once that's done....I think that means I have a release candidate.
However, I know it won't be that simple. Fixing bugs has the potential to introduce new ones. I worry about finding problems with a build and then having to go back in and fix those as well. I mean, I don't HAVE to, strictly speaking. It's going to be freeware on itch.io, so the only thing I have to worry about is if the game is completable.
I just want it done so it isn't hanging over me anymore. huh
