I stopped counting how many passengers we had in the van. However many we could fit, however many the bus would handle. They always brought one or two extras. The designated pickup points all had folks waiting for pickup. We told them to be on time and we wouldn't wait if there were nobody there. I'd always wait though, a few minutes, for serendipity. So I usually ran late. One last gas stop, then 56 miles to the safehouse.

I have exactly $10.51 for gas. That's maybe 2 gallons. That's maybe 55 miles. I slept during the day in the backseat with Rod curled up next to me. We parked the car behind a shuttered Denny's and nobody, thankfully, bothered us. Rod's good for nothing, but when I told him I was leaving he begged me to take him with. Without him to talk to I would have gone off the deep end by now. I keep hearing about this safehouse, i keep thinking it's a trap. Rob says to let him do all the worrying, since I'm doing all the driving. I wish I could
