realized that this might be a good place to ask for some information. i've been unemployed since august. i thought i would have a new job by now but i have been applying for every job i'm even remotely qualified for and have gotten two interviews, neither of which led to a job. feeling pretty hopeless right now.

i've been mostly applying to games companies, because that's where my experience is. but i have a wide range of programming skills and i'm open to working elsewhere.

my first request is: do people know good places to search for general software engineering jobs? general purpose job boards like indeed seem to have a lot of cruft, and it's hard to sort out opportunities at legitimate reasonable companies from places that suck.

my second request is: are you hiring a programmer? do you know anyone hiring a programmer? i have experience programming games, web stuff, desktop applications and tools, in C#, C/C++, rust, python, and javascript. i live in los angeles, if that matters.

finally: if you enjoy my posts here and want to help me afford rent and food, you can buy my games.

i've been considering starting one. i had one a long time ago and never got much traction with it, but my audience is like almost an order of magnitude bigger now lmao. i've struggled a bit trying to figure out what i would like, give people who backed me on patreon. i should probably just do it.

So I feel like it should be something that doesn't add too much stress for you on top, off the top of my head I could think:

  • Postmortem blogs once a month about something you made, why you made it, etc. Your favourite tools, things that inspire you.
  • Lean into your podcast and do a monthly anime recommendation or explainer.
  • I bookmarked this tweet of yours from ages ago meaning to follow up on it: https://twitter.com/prophet_goddess/status/1498487175045734403. You QT'ed a reply with some games you'd seen. Honestly I have no way of accessing that part of history and I would love to have regular posts taking me through it, one game a month or something.

Have you considered working with a recruiter? I’m my experience, it can be a little exhausting dealing with constant phone calls and emails after opening myself up to them, but they landed me a lot of interviews, and it worked out.

My company is hiring, if you want to check it out. Not games, and nothing that’s changing the world, but the pay and benefits are good, and I get treated well. https://www.magnite.com/careers/

I got my current job using Triplebyte, and it was a pleasant experience. I don't know if they have anything in the games industry, though. Most jobs I saw were in things like robotics, medical tech, financial tech, and other Silicon Valley-type industries (though plenty of the jobs are outside SV if you prefer).
