another of my big faves is how "remember this device" simply doesn't work. i haven't seen it do anything since like 2015. my guess is that they all create cookies that expire after 14 days or something, despite the fact that 99.5% of users who log into any corporate website are there solely to make a monthly bill payment.

my favorite iteration of this is the fraudulent "Don't ask again" dialog because it does not remember this choice. Discord still asks me about audio quality. Itunes still asks to update every time I open it.

in reply to @cathoderaydude's post:

Shouts out to a particular website that remembers who I am and acts like I'm logged in... but somehow shows me the data that it showed the last time I was there and doesn't actually give me access to any documents (without any errors!) because I'm not truly logged in. I always have to log out and log back in to get whatever services are involved back in sync.

i have argued with upper management about this and how there needs to be a single simple identity service that everything can talk to instead of a hodgepodge of everything doing it's own authentication or worse none at all

most company's internal services do not authenticate when talking to to each other and leave no audit trail for where requests originated, so this leads to scary untraceable spooky action at a distance bugs, including ironically, authentication issues

my work's IT got spooked by a phishing attempt (i assume) a couple years back so it's been 2fa hell for all our services and the inconsistencies with which it will remember your credentials for different things drives me absolutely insane. your microsoft credentials will last, maybe, 2 weeks (but you better believe you have to log in to BOTH outlook and teams when it kicks you out in the middle of lunch [the busiest time of day and most inconvenient time to have to deal with that, natch] and you better hope you didn't forget your phone in your car when you went to go get something to eat), but your vpn login absolutely requires 2fa every single time you use it. and of course, the "keep me logged in" checkbox, whose modal takes a few seconds to load, is there but does nothing at all. They actually listened when I asked them to hide it once! but then some update brought it back and i haven't bothered to submit another ticket to get rid of it. I found out recently that Jira's supposed to keep you logged in for two weeks after a colleague informed me that no, it is in fact strange that I need to log into it every day. arggghhhh
