Wham! - Last Christmas
The closest we get to dream pop for Christmas. The only christmas standard I can stand to listen to. Doesn't come on nearly enough.
Tatsuro Yamitasha - Christmas Eve
I had gotten into Tatsuro's catalog for a year before discovering he had a christmas album, and this song was made for a rail christsmas commercial, of all things. I'm really surprised it's not a standard by now...hmm
The Waitresses - Christmas Wrapping
Why isn't this a standard. It's got everything - acknowledging how hectic this time of year is, horns, etc. This is such a bop.
Sparks - Thank God It's Not Christmas
A new addition this year.
I'll throw a few more onto the list:
Low - Just Like Christmas
Not a Christmas song per se, but it captures the feeling of travelling for the holidays, the emotions and memories that it invokes, so well.
The Kinks - Father Christmas
Probably the ur-punk Christmas song, its only competition being:
The Vandals - Oi To the World
(The cover by No Doubt is great too)
Slade - Merry Xmas Everybody
It just kicks ass, happy and festive and everything I want in a holiday song.
The National - Christmas Magic (Bob's Buskers)
For the television show, of all things. Brief and melancholic, every good Christmas playlist needs a few downers.
And one comedy song:
Crudbump - Fuck You If You Don't Like Christmas
By Cohost's own @drewtoothpaste, it's about what it says on the tin.
