Apparently the HDMI group has closed off its forums to outsiders, meaning the latest standard (2.1) cannot be freely implemented in software like Linux. AMD has, apparently for a while, been trying to find a way to legally implement HDMI 2.1 drivers in the Linux kernel, but they keep getting stopped by HDMI and their own legal team. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I really wish the rest of the computer industry would've joined Apple in the early 2010s and used DisplayPort, or even better, joined them in 2016 and used USB-C/Thunderbolt for display output.
