Anybody have some to recommend? Here's some off the top of my head.

Ruina: Fairy Tale of the Forgotten Ruins: I already wrote about this one.

Bludgeons and Krakens: Challenging dungeon crawler, like if you crossed Diablo with an early Ultima game. Five classes, entertaining NPC writing. The dev also did the typing RPG Legend of Qwerty.

Path of Achra: Deconstructed action RPG build sandbox.

Shadow Over the Twelve Lands: Somebody made a Might and Magic in TIC-80!

Horizon's Gate: Combines Uncharted Waters with Final Fantasy Tactics-style jobs and Ultima world manipulation. Better with mods! Rad Codex does good work.

Neverwinter Nights Modules: There are a lot of these. I'd seek out The Aielund Saga, Prophet and Deja Vu. Hex Coda is worth looking at for how far it pushes the engine. Swordflight is for DND 3rd edition masochists.

in reply to @pig's post:

Fire in the Beastlands is a really good 2d soulslike that kind of looks like a Newgrounds game

Hero Lodge is a tactics rpg that makes its roster of 25 characters feel unique by giving them each a very limited number of abilities, which makes finding synergies between them really satisfying

Exit Fate is an RPGMaker Suikoden. I've never played the original Suikoden games so I can't say how it compares but I found it quite fun, and I assume making it must have been a ton of work.

Knights of the Chalice 2 is probably the ultimate game for D&D 3.5 CharOp perverts. I loved it but I also played with a bunch of the difficulty sliders dialed way down, like guaranteed max health and a feat every level.

Also, this one might not be weird enough, but anyone who hasn't tried the many games made by Spiderweb Software definitely should, particularly the remakes. No game has ever given me a greater sense of freedom than Avernum: Escape from the Pit

edit: Just remembered one that evidently isn't out yet: Sword of Jade, once said to be the crowning jewel of OHRRPGCE, is getting a Steam rerelease. It's been a long while since I played it but I remember it being shockingly good at the time. It's an active time battle menu RPG about anthropomorphic animals who tried to save the world but instead got depression.

Sword of Jade is definitely one of those all times "what is this?!?" games for sure, both in terms of ambition and cluelessness. i don't know if i'd play it myself but i'd love to watch somebody else try! i bet it'd be wild

Thanks for the recs! Fire in the Beastlands and Hero Lodge look neat. I'm a fan of Exit Fate, although I haven't ever finished it or Last Scenario...same with Avernum, although I learn slightly more towards Geneforge

super lesbian animal rpg is neat! i wrote about it on rpg maker dungeon a little while ago. i didn't put it on this list b/c i was angling more towards computer style rpgs, but consider it an honorary member
