I take it you have not read Critique of Hegel’s Philosophy of Right.
So you know all those passages where Marx criticizes Hegel as a medieval crypto-fascist?
uhhhhhhh what.
marx criticized hegel not because he is a crypto-fascist(???) but because he couches his arguments about the socialist of self-consciousness all in idealistic logic. marx actually agrees with a lot of things hegel is saying, at least his line of reasoning; it’s just that hegel doesn’t explore how spirit/geist/normativity is actually materially located.
this is also broadly speaking the left hegelian reading. books like pippin’s and pinkard’s works explore this perspective on the sociality of hegelian reasoning.
much of this argumentation can be explored in books like Philosophy and Revolution that explore how hegel and marx are working off ideas from german idealism. hegel is also supportive of the french revolution compared to thinkers like schopenhauer whose aristocratic thinking makes him disgusted at the very of democracy. i’m unsure how hegel is a fascist medievalist thinker when he literally argues for modernism.
tldr: marx says “Hegel is not to be blamed for depicting the nature of the modern state as it is, but rather for presenting what is as the essence of the state. The claim that the rational is actual is contradicted precisely by an irrational actuality, which everywhere is the contrary of what it asserts and asserts the contrary of what it is.” and i’m very unsure how to read it as marx criticizing hegel as crypto-fascist.
