on another server, we talked about how — despite criticism’s main point is to provoke discussions — they are anti-discussions. when discussions break out, people are underprepared to explore complex subjects.

Yes to all of this. What even is the point of the CD server if people aren't allowed to talk about the articles, in case that might hurt the feelings of the author? (Which it didn't, the author was fine! And even if they were not, the things you and Eithi were saying were not critical of them, but of the piece! If they had an issue, they would need to defend the points made in their piece, which is... the entire point of critical discussion!!!!)
