The tedium of having to nvl clear every few lines alone is brutal to me.

kinda curious what annoyed you about it, i think it didn't give me too much trouble until i started trying mix nvl and adv (nightmare)
i would love to customize a lot of stuff in general, but renpy lacks them. even character portraits need to be added. makes me lazy to think about it.
sometimes, i am tempted to just boot up rpg maker 2003 because it’d be faster to make a nvl there.
