When Samuel ran across the island of Godfall, he was initially very intrigued by this order of monks who like brawling as much as he does, and then ABSOLUTELY HORRIFIED to discover their grotesque rites of RESHAPING THEIR BODIES and ran away with no intentions of returning. The good doctor, meanwhile, was delighted to find the deacon "broadening his horizons" and recommended opportunities to learn more from the rubbery men.... LONG STORY SHORT SAM VERY ABRUPTLY ACQUIRED A LOT OF KNOWLEDGE ABOUT SHAPELING ARTS and has been coping with that in only reasonable ways: recklessly throwing himself into learning and practicing this so he can be sure he's got it under control.
He went right back to Godfall to try his hand at the rites, by the way. Samuel can only handle upsetting things by running away or running towards them there is NO middle ground
