if I wanted to keep up on local sports teams

Was it always like this? I could have sworn when I was a child all local sports teams had their games on the local over the air broadcast. Now every year I go "I should watch hockey" only to find out I can pay $10+ a month to watch every other team play the regular season, but if I want to watch the home team or the playoffs I have to choose between two $100 a month TV packages from DirectTV or something called fubu so I can access the Regional Sports Network Root-NW

There was a period in the early 2000s I was paying for a pirated hockey streaming service that was just a bunch of guys streaming their local broadcast and it was infinitely more accessible.

I remember a local channel having a lot of the Wild games, and some Timberwolves ones, in the mid 00s, then, they got moved to Fox Sports North, which became Bally, and all the RSN fees got super pricey, which led to so many services cutting ties with them, and now games are just a pain in the ass to watch legitimately.
