An attempt to reboot the Devil May Cry franchise by way of studio Ninja Theory, who were ordered by Capcom to completely re-imagine protagonist Dante and the world around him. The end result did not go over particularly well.

this is the best devil may cry game

and by best i obviously mean "my favorite" and by "my favorite" i mean noisia on the soundtrack alone makes this a better action game than most others but genuinely i think this game gets a million times more shit than it deserves because of the name despite being a top-to-bottom incredible action game with some really killer boss fights

If anything, after 10 years of mediocre torso bosses in other action games, it’s even MORE impressive

I know this game has had something of a critical reappraisal in the last few years, and I'm willing to accept that it actually is a much better game than its reputation would have you believe... but then I remember the pitch deck for the game which basically stops just shy of calling you the f-slur if you liked the previous games, and remember why it deserved to get shitted on.

One of the most dissapointing games I tried in 2023. I figured with all the talk that this game is overhated that it still had a fun core but all I could think playing the game is this game is just mostly doing systems excatly from DMC but nowhere near as deep or intresting so it made me just feel eh I can play and try 4 and 5 instead.

For all the talk of if I would say ironicaly its biggest flaw is it mostly trys to do so little new gameplay wise with being a reboot. Just simplifies DMC systems and kinda automates them and didn't feel like much else stuck out. Man the story and writting and pacing was awful. Not so bad ita good or even cringey just a boring lifless action blockbuster movie level feeling of writting. Like the Hitman movie and the Reaident Evil movies etc for its story

I post it here just to acknowledge the birthday and the decidedly mixed reception surrounding it. I'm no expert at the character action genre, but I can accept that the game is presented very stylishly and has some novel ideas driving its gameplay. But man oh man, some of those character and narrative decisions can't help but get under my skin, and knowing the duress it was developed under leaves a bit of that sour taste in my mouth. But just to be clear: I'm not the sort to knock anyone for enjoying a game that others loathe. (That's kind of my raison d'être, as a matter of fact.)

I would normally share the narrative frustrations...except that the only game in this entire franchise with a good story was 3, and everything else was some form of mess. For all DmC's missteps, itanages to be one of the best written entries, if only because the competition was such a mess (and also 5 doing Lady that horribly dirty, do not get me started).

1 is a tonal mess with weird incest vibes, 2 is unfinished, 4 is less unfinished with a less interesting antagonist and a female lead who could be replaced with a lamp, and 5 was so up its own ass about the Sparda bloodline that it made my eyes roll into the back of my head, plus Lady spending the entire game in the Prison Womb or naked to be ogled at. DmC has a ton of issues in its writing, but not to the degree of the others, and actually achieves a few ambitions.

3 is just immaculate, a one in a lifetime sort of work.

I think I can understand what you mean with the flaws of the other games, it's just I gotta know what makes think that DmC is the best written. Is it cause the cutscenes or something? Devil May Cry ain't a series you play for the story, y'know?

That's fair! I should also be clear I am definitely not resharing to be like "WRONG, ACTUALLY" either haha. I def know why people have issues with it and in terms of the narrative stuff I can definitely concede to some of it but I like it a whole bunch, still. Different strokes etc

Yeah, the original console releases have some technical foibles (30 Hz refresh, albeit with 60 Hz controller polling, which, better than nothing, I suppose) and the writing can be a little obnoxious in places for my tastes watching footage now, but the core combat is solid stuff and like you said, there are definitely some real set pieces!

All told, there are definitely worse releases in that era of Capcom's western commissioned games (I'll forever be sore that they opted for Lost Planet 3 over a localization of EX Troopers, too, and people there more or less know it) and the technical hangups aren't a problem on PC and (presumably) PS4/XBO. Personal tastes in terms of writing and whatnot aside, it accomplishes what it sets out to do on the whole and I had a good time overall for what it was! And I'm definitely very choosy when it comes to the character action games I'll put time into.

Right??? Imagine making a TPS as visually and aurally vibrant as EX Troopers, having that game bomb in Japan because, whaddya expect publishing a TPS here in 2012, and instead of thinking, "people love anime overseas and they love TPSs, I bet this'll sell way better in other countries anyway, let's go for it," somebody had the bright idea that Lost Planet 3 in all its genericness would solve their problems.

Haunts me to this day that happened and that they stubbornly sit on it without porting it elsewhere. Genuinely heartbreaking. :eggbug-pensive:

Lol I worked on LP3 and it was an epic clusterfuck with some really interesting ideas and a complete failure of execution. I actually asked our producer at the time about EX and he stated "it wouldn't work for US audiences" and at that moment I knew we were all doomed.

My own understanding coming from someone who would definitely know is that there was also an intention to at least have a meeting internally to discuss the prospect of localizing EX Troopers and then just... that PowerPoint didn't get made and I assume the game bombing as badly as it did in Japan probably made them shrug and not bother. Truly a cursed game and it kills me that Dragon's Dogma (a game I really like, mind you!) got its second chance and a happy ending as a fellow underdog of that same vintage while this game just withers on the vine. 😩

i was unfortunate enough to be a 4chan user at the time and man if you ever wanted to see some dimwits get real fucking upset shit that doesn't matter, that was the game for it

It was like right at the height of dubstep too, yet they still managed to not go overboard and retained their sound. There's also a literal dance club theme and the accompanying fight it goes with matched up really well, and I still remember playing that chapter a few times post-game so I could re-experience it.

It was extremely powerful for the devs to acknowledge that dante is is a dipshit who punches good. The 'fuck you!' back and forth was so spot-on and it felt like hardly anyone got the point of it

And you know people were just butt hurt because it wasn't their Dante that featured in this game too, and that Virgil wasn't generically evil. I mean, I like both the original brothers well enough, but I like the reimagining of them as well, if not more, because it didn't adhere to the bog standard. Besides, even original recipe Dante would tell the naysayers of DmC to screw off because this game was badass and the soundtrack was bangin' as hell.
