Telomere (digital audio)

For other uses, see Telomere (disambiguation).
A telomere is a short segment of typically white noise placed at the beginning and end of digital audio. As the majority of information loss due to lossy compression occurs when data reading is started or stopped,[1] telomeres provide a place to do so without affecting the quality of the intended data.[2] Many audio formats contain metadata listing the locations of telomeres so that they may be skipped during playback.[3][4] Hidden tracks which are obscured using this metadata are thus sometimes also referred to as telomeres.[5]
