i need to internalize that picking up and putting down mandarin several times over the past few years because i like the language and, uh, there are lots of speakers so it'll maybe be useful is much more weeby [derogatory] than if i tried learning japanese, a language i don't really care for but which i've wished i'd known for multiple interactions over the same timespan
