to a game that often had Sonic flying across the map on a diagonal axis at more speed than should be possible given engine parameters, you added:

  • a massive triple jump that can stack into both a hover and a somersault move that roughly doubles potential height

  • gliding, rapidly chained between homing attacks and what feels like a literal re-implementation of the SA2 climbing physics (yes, they’re still that slippery)

and

  • flight, which can chain into a fucking flying robot mech, where the character has both a hovering triple jump that’s pushed from the bottom in addition to the flying quadruple jump

shit is so jank it’s fucking beautiful. they built kaizo 3D sonic but they built it into the shambling corpse of hedgehog engine 2. the combat is straight up unfair, the ā€œlevel designā€ (read: the construction of colorful panels arranged into miniature sonic the hedgehog 3D platforming challenges hanging out in the skybox of a myst remaster) would be brilliant in a game with better controls and a camera that doesn’t cause motion sickness, and the voice direction could use some improvement… it’s sonic the fuckin hedgehog baby, awoo, we’re so fucking back, sonic’s good again, etc

i was in the middle of a hardcore platforming section as amy, chaining together all these fucking. triple jump somersault throw fortune cards into a bunch of blocks homing attack grind quickstep hover jump type combos.

and i just… fell through the environment. just clean out. i tapped the wrong wall at the exact wrong angle and i just teleported into the abyss, watching ouronos island slowly disappear above me. and i just laughed a ton and kept on going, because of course that was going to happen, it’s sonic team being weird!

this is what they do! they make weird busted ass games that don’t even try to make sonic feel remotely natural. you’re just trying to steer this big blue floating cartoon wrecking ball hurtling through space only this time it’s got the trappings of a dubbed shōnen anime written by a Sonic dweeb and it’s got spectacle fighter and SHMUP bits in it.

speaking of which, morio kishimoto will never apologize to fans who were Weird about the game’s original final boss, and in fact they doubled down by adding more bullet hell mechanics, this time with a certain new mini-boss in the overworld. nier automata ass sonic the hedgehog game.

it’s lovably shit. jae told me there’s a word for that? sonic team makes kusoge, and when they actually embrace that is when they put out the weird good shit. have you ever actually played NiGHTs into Dreams? i’ll probably get hunted down for saying this but like… it also controls like shit?? it’s got a lot of weird problems! when you know what you’re doing and how to make the game do that, it’s fantastic, but it takes effort to get it there. it’s a hard game with finnicky controls that sometimes breaks. and yet, it’s still one of the best games on the saturn. sonic adventure 2 is kusoge. so’s this, and that makes it better than generations and forces by a mile.
