stream-of-consciousness rambling on webcomic distribution below

recently i’ve been thinking about different ways of distributing comics that don’t rely on social media for getting people to engage with it. part of it came from a conversation with friends about rss the other day, but it also comes from ongoing thoughts about work that is or was serialized in magazines, etc (that is to say i picked up some copies of Heavy Metal at a flea market and am fascinated by its existence). i like a comic that feels like it is part of a bigger Thing, but don’t know exactly how i’d want or be able to create that experience now slash in an independent format. newsletter-style thing seems interesting, but i’m just not sure i’ve got The Juice for the other sort of things that i’d want to include, whatever those are (non-comics writing? opinions? reviews? idk).

i’m also like, i want people to read the thing but i don’t want them to have to do it on social media, so i made the website and set up an rss feed. neat! but what about the comments? do i want a comments section? do i want a discord? do i feel like i could moderate either? is there a way email could factor into this? maybe, but then it’s a one-way communication between me and the reader; maybe a letter column? would that be interesting, or just for my own sake? and once other people are reading it, again, how do they talk to other other people about it?

ultimately i feel like what i’m craving is a local alt-weekly i could slot my stuff into or something so it’s part of a bigger thing without me having to build the scaffolding. that’d be neat. wait am i just wanting to be part of “the funny pages”

i've always wondered if there would be a community for little joint comic newsletters or RSS feed. like a newspaper but it's just only the comics, showcasing the hits and newcomers to the space. a real physical print out collection would be cool too. Plus roughly the same moderation requirement for receiving fan mail or comments.

...nothing doing on some cheap mass printed newspaper would feel very biteable

this strikes me as a solid sort of thing for sure; plenty of examples of it working in offline spaces, stands to reason a digital version would work. that said, the main thing keeping me from really seriously thinking about something like that is the logistical weight it would take, which of course points to my biggest problem being that there’s a hidden asterisk on all of this that says “and also i wish it were really easy” lol

i've read about a few times where some popular seralized comics that end up being beholden to the newspaper(s) that they're being published in received pushback against something being published at least once in their lifetimes if it conflicts with the "morals" of the people and advertisers funding the newspaper

it's unfortunate that the freedom of the internet being able to let anyone self-publish also requires them to self-moderate and self-promote and all these other things that tack on time and energy needed to continue creating something that are not directly contributing to the creative process

yeah ultimately i’m happy existing in a space where i can just sort of do my thing as i please; i don’t even mind doing the logistical stuff on my own too much. it’s only when i’m to think of a way to put things out there off social media that doesn’t feel either overwhelming or isolating that i have brain-sick thoughts like “i wish i had a publisher” lol

I'm wondering if you ever heard of the Menomonee Falls Guardian. Despite the newspaper-sounding name it was actually a weekly tabloid that ran nothing but comics. Mostly syndicated newspaper strips, although they ran other weekly strips as well (the highlight for me was "Conchy" by James Childress, which was notable for being a strip that the creator syndicated himself to newspapers). I thought that was a neat idea and wish it lasted longer; you can find used copies on eBay and the ilk if you're curious about them,

I have similar feelings about how I wanna approach "Lauren Ipsum". I feel like it would've done great if it was part of a bigger thing, like in a newspaper comics section. I wish alt-weekly papers were still viable; there's one in Memphis that expressed interest in running "Lauren" but they're still in a budget crunch when I inquired, although I might contact them again after enough time passes.

I'd love for something akin to Menomonee Falls Guardian to be brought back, tho, with a mix of strip-style webcomics and maybe even newspaper strips that deserves more circulation. I considered doing something like that, but I have my hands full as it is.

i hadn’t heard of this, but it looks really interesting - gonna have to dig into it some more, thanks! and i hope that alt-weekly situation ends up working out for you, selfishly because it’d be cool to know someone’s out there Makin’ It Happen
