in a spacefaring future, pounds and kilograms would no longer be roughly synonymous as weight and mass are fundamentally different as soon as gravity is inconstant. for most tasks, kilograms are likely the more important measurement, but weightlifters would probably continue to use pounds, as the weight of what they're lifting is much more important than its mass
what's REALLY weird is i'm pretty sure someone on Lower Decks had this exact same thought? at one point Ransom is talking about how much he can lift and says "250" without naming a unit of measurement. given his build, there's NO way he means 250 kilos; so though the show uses the metric system for nearly everything, it definitely is using pounds to refer to weightlifting
