we got a combination mattress years ago - foam on top of springs - and we've been very happy with it. the downside of those is you need to go through old school brick and mortar mattress stores, since they don't ship as well as foam only ones.

A Casper mattress was the first thing I bought with my first real paycheck and it was great for 8+ years. I just recently replaced it with a bigger Casper mattress so my partner and I can comfortably sleep on it together, and that one's great too.

This time we got the Casper from Costco because it's a lot cheaper than the one they sell on their website

And yeah, this isn't just Casper - my partner's old mattress was from Leesa, and we refer to part of last year as "the Sparklening" for a reason. We still have some items in storage that we haven't had energy or time to vacuum/clean.

In our case, we did remove the mattress cover to wash it, but we realized afterwards that it had been shedding small fiberglass fibers through the cover for at least a year at that point - causing irritation on their back, and making the floor underneath itchy for bare feet.

All I have is this video about how mattresses sold in physical stores are often sold at different names and price points, despite being essentially exactly the same mattress. It's 5 years old and might not apply outside of Australia (or the past) but may at least be entertaining.

Amazon has some foam mattresses for low prices, you don't have to buy name brand if your priority is to save most of the money and get 80-90% of the way there. Same warning about it containing fiberglass applies though, I can say.

If you have an ikea near you, they let you go sit on a whole bunch of mattresses in the showroom, I can attest to the quality, and their prices are generally pretty OK too. Got a semi-firm one from them and it's definitely fixed my back.

Second going somewhere with a range of mattresses and trying them out. I thought I'd hate a memory foam mattress topper but it was was actually incredibly comfortable. We have a Ikea bed with one on, it's the most comfy bed I've ever slept in. Their mattresses come rolled up and compressed so much easier to carry around.

Hello, former IKEA mattress department sales person here. I strongly agree with this recommendation to actually try out mattresses before you buy them. Trying out some thing that you’re going to sleep on every night the first time when you buy it and put it in your house is a terrible idea.

We recently purchased a HAUGSVÄR medium-firm from Ikea to replace one of those cheap memory form models, and while the process to get the old mattress removed was more complicated than necessary, the actual mattress itself is very good. We're floating credit card debt for the first time in years to pay for it because the old one was causing my partner to have back problems, and it's good enough that we don't regret making that decision.

We didn't have the option to go to an actual Ikea location to try it out (no car, partner is very disabled, covid) so we rolled the dice and got lucky that it was the right firmness. Definitely recommend going to an Ikea store to try them out if possible, but the actual quality of the product is good regardless.

i’ve gotten better results going to a local store than trying to buy something online or at a big box. generally the quality is better, it may have a warranty, and the prices are often negotiable. YMMV on that last one—i’m personally not very good at that sort of thing, but my wife haggled for it last time we bought one and got a couple hundred bucks off and free delivery.

also, a mattress is one of those things that’s definitely worth spending a little extra if you can swing it. you’ll be spending somewhere around 6-10 hours per day in it for the next 5-10 years, and getting Good Sleep can drastically improve your overall quality of life in just about every way. (you probably know this already, but i mention it because always have to remind myself of this when it’s a larger purchase that is important for my health)
