I was struck by how Steinbeck's writing does this, when I reread Grapes of Wrath. I feel like it's the kinda thing we have sorta trained out of us as a stylistic error but it can be so powerful and evocative!
if it's good enough for jesus, it's good enough for me lol
I've always loved the theory that Old Willy Shakes himself was part of the team that made the King James Bible. It does have so many turns of phrase that pepper the cultural well of metaphors within the English language.
