WOW, The Caves of Androzani is incredible. Obviously the script is fantastic, but I was shocked by the tactility of everything -- the androids' hyper-colored vision, the wild zooms on the spaceship crash, the extraordinarily tense sequence of trying to remove the handcuffs. Every episode left me shocked and delighted. I think this may be my new favorite Classic Who serial???

For sure, Caves tops the fan favorite lists for a reason! I think it's probably the best-directed classic story for the reasons you mentioned.
Also a highlight for me is the guy who was, intentionally or not, told to monologue his lines directly at the camera. It's theatrical and a bit unnerving in a real cool way.
Edit: Looked it up and it was indeed the actor misunderstanding a stage direction, but director Graeme Harper (the GOAT who'd go on to direct a bunch of DT episodes including Waters of Mars) decided to keep it.

My favourite detail about Caves is that The Doctor starts to regenerate at the end of Episode 3 but manages to shake it off until the end of Episode 4. But because regeneration looked different each time it happened in the classic series you don't actually realise that's what's happening at the time.
