Several suburbs and exurbs of Omelas decided to get their own misery pit children to fuel their own utopias, not realizing that omelas only gets about 40% of its high standard of living from the misery pit child process and a lot of the rest comes from things like good urbanism, transit, and public policies. As a result there are now six additional misery pit children in the greater omelas metropolitan area, but five of them have a two hour commute to get to the pit every day

the real tragedy is that the omelette suburbs nimbyed the bus system reaching their neighborhoods so the kids can't even read on their commute, smdh
