I said I would use this as a personable bastion of shameless self-promotion and baby the time for that starts now (or rather whenever I finish the draft and actually post)
I've been chipping away at Vapormage for over three years now. It started from talking video game ideas with a coworker who was/is obsessed with vaporwave and quickly became a "let's muck about with RPG tropes" playground, until whoops, I built a world and a story, oopsie doodle
So depending on the audience and how I feel about my own competence, I would either describe Vapormage as "a queer fantasy/sci-fi adventure about trust, consequences, and the sense of self", or "a budget Final Fantasy with the serial numbers filed off". COOL BUG FACT: try all you like you can't outrun your influences
The core of the plot involves the eponymous vapormage, Kell Rusalka, and their traveling companions (Sheila, Alejandro, and Tobias) trying to stop a smoldering war from reigniting, with the aid(?) of--among others--a pop megastar, a ubiquitous businessman, and some undying eldritch creatures that mostly just kinda vibe? (There's plenty of "who can you actually trust?" going on here, and the story the cast experiences is definitely not the full picture for the setting.)
I finally pulled it all together over last year's NaNoWriMo, and since then I've been rewriting it with the help of a friend's beta read notes, because it turns out that if you write 60k words in a little over 30 days, the output is, to be kind to myself, naff nonsense. I'm now at that 60k mark with just under a third left to rewrite, and it's much less nonsense. But still, like, some nonsense. I'm not a professional.
I did a little snapshot thread on the old site about the cast and story and whatnot, but that was a little bit ago and also centered on the cast's queerness, so I'll do more up-to-date posts here in time.
When will the book come out? Fuck if I know! It's not even done! That's a very early question at this point, frankly! I had wanted to finish rewriting this year but yeah ha ha good joke but hopefully I can start shopping it around early next year.
