we a re daily song posting it up! here's another one from my new experimental SNES chiptune album Distant Islands!

<-- the previous day's song | the next day's song -->

today's song is: Lazuline Isle of Lakes, for the SNES's soundchip SPC700

my goal here from the outset was to choose some samples that could evoke something reminiscent of the brothers Zoomlight, aka Chimeratio and Cryptovolans, both masters of texture. i used a couple chord samples: a quartal and quintal stack, which were actually old DPCM samples of mine from ashflower that i resampled... everything else is actually sampled from a recent tune, the lv1 theme i made for our recent LD game jam game. i recorded a phrase of the drums to use as a loop, the textural blippy sample was the rhythmic gated instrument (one of Tancla's Vital presets under a volume gate), and the sub too was from Tancla's Vital collection but i only short-sampled the sine. since there was a lot of downsampling involved i also brought in the SNES noise channel for some higher frequency content. likewise, pitch modulation is used all over the place for glitchy FM texture!

once i had all the samples chosen it was really just a matter of arranging them in cool ways. the blippy guy did a lot of heavy lifting to introduce the tune with an underwater type feel, and the slowed drum loop too because of the bloopy sounds in the middle. i ended up using the chords kind of melodically and the sub to build upon and anchor the beat. the later section came about because i wanted to do more transposing-around of the chord samples as well as use the drum loop at faster speeds for break-like shenanigans. and that's it! suddenly, a song.

this one was one of my favorites; i was really pleased with how it turned out. it was one of the last songs written for the album and made me feel like i'd filled in an important puzzle piece
