daily song post makes an appearance on this here thursed day... or perhaps fried day depending on your locale. this is my series where i post a playback video of one of my songs and write a little bit of exclusive juicy deets about the song here, in the post. it was daily once. it might even temporarily become daily again at some point. but it will forever remain... a song post. yes. ok let's dig in
today's song is: Dreamrenders, for the NES's 2A03 soundchip plus expansion audio in the form of VRC6 and N163 chips. thassa lotta channels!
last summer i did my first N163 thing - come to think of it, i still haven't Daily Song Posted about it, either - and this summer i wanted to give it a second shot. the N163 chip is a wavetable dealio, which means you can go anywhere from replicating simple synth waves to chaining a bunch together for cool effects or approximating samples. i have put considerable effort into trying to convert a bunch of SNES and N64 sounds; some work better than others. this one features a crude approximation of the chrono trigger piano, dkc2 violin, a harp from rudra's treasure, and a flute from plok.
the neat thing about this one is that both of the seedling ideas for the two main sections came to me in dreams! this is not a common occurrence for me at all, and it's rare for them to a) stick with me and b) actually be worth their salt in the waking world, but here we are. i mean the ideas were just a couple bars each but i felt good about fleshing them out and thought it'd be fun to work both into a song together. i also used a bit of dialogue i recorded with my field recorder when i was in chicago in march... it's from one of a bunch of displays at the museum of science and industry's u-boat exhibit.
i'm pretty proud of how the proggy rhythmic section turned out. it feels like a workout whenever i write something like that, literally. tiresome but rewarding like building up a muscle. it's really fun to manage all those parts though!
