today's song is: COLOR-FLOOD, for MSGS MIDI
this song was a valiant attempt at writing "a tricot song". if you don't know that band, they are a crazy Japanese math rock group with a hearty gloss of pop on top and some tasty, jazzlike harmonies. their album "3" i would declare sonic perfection; one of my favorites of all time that i could never tire of. recommended listening.
having never really written math rock before, much less in MIDI form, this was a challenging piece to construct. i spent ages sequencing all the intricate drum parts, trying to keep the sound dynamic in spite of the samples (especially with the power snare). i studied the phrasing of tricot's drummer intensely to try and wrap my head around where and how to change or accent the pulse. i also tried to write something singable for the melody, since Ikkyu is always belting out pop anthems over the top of so much angular sound. the tune itself is loosely based on this OHB that i liked a lot and wrote when i was feeling deeply emotional. even though i think i could do better next time, i'm really proud of how this turned out!
i tried really hard to squeeze all the life and vitality that i could out of the instruments - i'm not a huge fan of either of the MSGS distorted/overdriven guitars (nor do i regularly write for guitar...), but i had fun rapidly switching between the two, which i think made it more engaging overall.
i didn't think super consciously about the meter while i wrote; just played and phrased things how i thought sounded good. for this video i went in and actually added time signature changes, haha. some of them i kind of had to hack - there's a part in the middle where the pulse metrically modulates to one-and-one-third beats and there is just no way to notate that given how i sequenced it... so it goes.
