song post! songposting! today's daily video of a song with cohost commentary is in fact another awesome collaborative experience...! i hope you enjoy it

<-- the previous day's song | the next day's song -->

today's song is: Snowflakes, Starlight and Star Bits (collab with blue.nocturne and zenkusa), for MSGS MIDI

this triple collab from Winter Chip XVI was more-or-less the product of me saying "hey we should collaborate on a MIDI" hoping to pump my friends up and It Worked. actually there was once a cool interview with all of us about what we all contributed to the song, but it disappeared into the internet aether many moons ago, so i'll do my best to talk a little about it... @zenkusa is on here though, he might have something to add in the comments? (if he wants anyway) you should follow zenkusa, he makes some of the most amazing music on this whole interweb

anyway, so this started out with BlueNoc wanting to write something like a pop banger, so he wrote the first section and therefore that catchy-as-all-hell main theme. (heartfelt earworm melodies are his greatest strength in my opinion!) he wanted to use some of the simple-synth GS alternate bank instruments too, such as the Regular Saw and the Sine Wave, which really give the song its character.

the middle portion of the song, which slows down into a more relaxed, groovy, atmospheric take on the theme, was my contribution. we basically all wrote a big section based on the theme and tried to string it all together. zenkusa really went friggin' wild with his part after my section - not only is it the longest section, but uhh, can you even believe what all he did!? i still can't. it's some absolute MIDI wizardry. his part takes you to prog town and just when you think it can't climb any higher in intensity, IT DOES...! the way the meter and chords leap around is some super exciting stuff. and then a piano rendition of the theme closes it out.

BlueNoc had to take care of some fun stuff at the end - he and i both work in FL but zenkusa's on Reaper, so some annoying import issues had to be dealt with coming back into FL at the end for BlueNoc to touch things up. thanks, FL! Fruity LSD is an awesome MSGS MIDI tool but the import screws up pitch bend range, GS instrument info, and probably some other stuff i'm forgetting. anyway, both these guys are real troopers for putting something like this together. i really hope to do another collab with these fine folks in the future! Winter Chip XVIII is coming up soon, maybe... maybe... hmmmmm πŸ€”
