i'm here on the internet to share a new video of one of my songs! and then write about it! right here on cohost! isn't that crazy? it's almost like i've been doing this over a month now. i hope y'all are still enjoying following along! i like revisiting all these tunes...

today's song is: Crystal Sakura, for Yamaha XG MIDI (SYXG50)

having mostly just done little one-hour tunes in XG, this was my first attempt at spending longer with it (back in spring 2022); my main mission, as you might be able to tell, was to explore some of the percussion textures especially with respect to chopped-up/retriggered very short notes. it's a little different than MSGS, both with how the velocity curve is shaped and with the presence of actual DSP like the stock reverb. (in these respects i actually think it's a little harder to get the same sorts of textures, but it's still a cool effect imo!) i also tried to do some break-like stuff in the latter part of the song although i didn't do my usual brand of pattern-chopping there; just wanted some really busy textures going on.

XG actually offers a reasonable number of effects and CCs to automate so i had fun playing with the filter on the lead (that's what the automation at the bottom is doing) and testing out some retriggered notes in the Crystal lines also. not sure this is a very focused tune overall, but as an experiment, it was valuable to learn what i could do in the format, and the result is pretty texturally neat at least.

pretty sure the melody starting at 0:58 was intended to be a deliberate reference to "Infinite Loop" from Sample Pack Contest IX (which i wrote with my good friend Kevin/Dr Fruitcake)
