today's song is: The Wind Whistles Softly Through the Cracks of Our Home, for AdLib soundcard (OPL2/3)
this was my first time writing for AdLib - for one of the Advent Calendar 2022 days - and i decided to go with the OpenMPT route because of how seemingly difficult it would've been to learn AdLibTracker or Reality in one day... the list of shortcuts was like a mile long. very intimidating. the .mptm version can't use OPL3 (4-op) FM instruments but you do get the full suite of 18 channels instead of 9, as well as the classic .it effects and envelopes suite so i felt i still had plenty of room for sound design and texture. in fact a lot of the parts are not only spaced out across several channels but doubled on other instruments. 18 channels is a lot!
as with a lot of the songs i did for Advent (and, well, generally i guess), this song was written at the piano first and then arranged in the tracker. i was going for something soft and sad, comforting but also a little uneasy. there's a lot of progression in this one! three distinct sections, with sort of a through-line of the light glitchy percussion. pretty happy with the underlying melody in this one, and this was prooobably my favorite of the batch of Advent Calendar 2022 tunes.
