146k streams on what is effectively just an 8 track EP and some singles, with only half of the EP tracks really taking off is just. it's nuts. what the fuck.

everyone always talks about Momentum™ and how you have to keep releasing new tracks in order to stay relevant. honestly i completely stopped believing in the idea. 'idaidaida' is at 190,000ish streams right now, i believe? which means that only about 45k of those happened in 2022, and the other 145k were all from this past year.

because of distribution issues, the EP dropped from spotify for a whole month around may/june. and that didn't even kill my momentum. in fact, it went right back to the same amount of plays once it got back on the platform, and it's still climbing.

while i want to put out more music and 'idaidaida II' is gonna be released somewhere within the next half year, honestly i don't even think i need to release anything new. thanks to the algorithm and playlists and word of mouth i assume, my statistics just keep snowballing more and more.

spotify is awful for artists when it comes to payment, but i never expected to get that out of it anyways. what i did get out of it is a fanbase that has grown completely organically over the past year. ok that sounds like some corporate slang but i'm still just speechless at how people actually connect with this silly EP i made, how many friends i've made through it, how i've been able to use my popularity to help other artists get a start via @CUTECERVID, all of that stuff.

literally every time i look at my spotify statistics, there's at least a handful of people listening to my music. it only drops to 0 whenever it's super late in the US. like what the fuck?? i made these songs just for fun while hanging out with my friends in discord calls and shit like that, and it somehow resonates with so many people?? like what can i even say about that???

that being said while i appreciate spotify's services for granting me an audience, you should feel absolutely free to pirate my music. i know i've mentioned that many times before, but for real, i don't mind it at all; heck, if you ask me i might just send you the audio files myself. thing is, i can't just build an audience through piracy alone, you know? that's my only real motivation for using spotify.
