One of many tone-setters for this year, the New York Times was met with criticism in early-mid February for its trend of poor coverage with regard to trans people. The paper's "just asking questions" approach to the number of trans people gave the anti-trans movement undue credence, often citing the Times coverage as vindication. It was even used in legal testimony on bans around the country.
When confronted by thousands of signatories among its contributors, readers, and folks in the media industry, as well as GLAAD and numerous advocacy organizations, the Times stuck its head in the sand and maintained that its coverage was something to be proud of.
It also obfuscated the two separate letters from its contributors and GLAAD to brand them both as acts of "advocacy," a taboo in legacy journalism.
