The Tony Hawk of Tokimeki Memorial

A most of the time Japanese>English game translator and writer and all the time dating sim wonk.

Bought a Super Game Boy 2 complete in box for pretty crazy cheap today because even though a Game Boy Player combined with GameCube homebrew is a powerful gift to humanity, even that can't enable to enjoy the finest(?) dating sims on God's Green Earth the way they were meant to be played: in front of a TV and not all wondering why you aren't playing infinitely better games made for TVs that have, y'know, voice acting like the OGs pioneered.

I'm living good tonight.

So the joke is half on me with that specific game I posted (Pocket Love 2) because that one actually does have VO through some sort of CD player "connectivity" I still haven't gotten around to figuring out. It's nothing fancy like Angelique and its IR blaster, I suspect it might quite literally be the game just saying "go to track X as we play this scene automatically" or whatever but yeah. One of these days I'll get the CD and figure it out ahaha.

And you would think I would remember with Sakura Taisen GB since I played through a good chunk of at least the sequel and I wanna say I remember that having voice, but work has been such a slog since then, I can't say with confidence right now ahaha. To be fair, if I want a GB dating sim with voice acting, I've got the OG of OGs to turn to by way of Tokimemo Pocket, which I'll be popping in soon enough to admire its own humble Super Game Boy features soon enough. 😌

omg I love it when a game comes with extended unrelated media that you have to interact with to have a cohesive experience. That's so silly, like what player wouldn't just keep the CD running and have the entire game spoiled for them via just listening to all the tracks lol

Hope you're doing well! I've gone the opposite way of real hardware and just figured out how to get 3DS emulation working on my Steam Deck so I can finally beat Etrian Odyssey Nexus 🤔

I'm doing pretty good, yeah! Hope you're doing great and then some too! It's been a long ass process getting settled here in Japan, but I'm almost, almost finally done with the last bits of that to-do list and then I can just focus on existing here for a good while ahaha. If you ever need to message me, I do still check my Twitter DMs, or if you wanna stay in touch elsewhere, just let me know. I certainly have missed our conversations during my extended Twitter break. 😌

And yeah, if I wasn't running into just enough examples of emulator wonkiness with the sort of forgotten Japanese games I like to play, I'd probably be doing the exact same thing as you. It's fun building out an actual setup, but it's a life I don't recommend anyone do either, ahaha. I got fed up with Linux tinkering so my Deck is mostly just my PC games machine, but it is fun to go in and import stuff and see what Proton can handle. I just need the Deck's Linux distro to properly support Shift-JIS so I can play older Japanese stuff without corrupted text, that's honestly my main gripe at this point, ahaha
