seeing a lot of younger JP folk commiserating about the state of Splatoon 3 atm: specifically, that because it was such an iterative sequel, there were a ton of expert players from day one and the game's now at a point where there are so many veterans and the skill ceiling is so high that newcomers get completely shut down, and how they've never seen anything like this with any other series

cue all the oldheads, who immediately showed up with a history lesson about a lil game called Virtua Fighter 3

I said as much in the comments, but Gundam Extreme Versus would also like a word with these people. Have YOU stumbled into a networked cabinet on accident in the last 15 years thinking it was solo and wasted someone's 100 yen recently?

(I did a decade ago at the Taito Hey and the guy I was unwittingly teamed up with stormed off his cabinet fuming and I've felt both terrible and too batshit scared about repeating it to ever play it in an arcade since.)

I guess it makes enough sense if Nintendo games are literally all they've ever known when it comes to playing multiplayer, but even more recently than VF3, have none of these people stepped onto the Gundam Extreme Versus floor of their local arcade and tried to play a networked cabinet in like the last 15 years? Because they can definitely find plenty of games with such a severe skill ceiling if they just walk down the street. 🥴
