this site isn't the forum to post this sort of thing expecting anyone to actually notice, so i'm only writing this to vent, but
man, it continues to be such a bummer to see big, otherwise respectable and decent game news sites that will cover the labor impacts of ai one minute, then then around and use google translate the next to provide coverage of some japanese industry development as if localizers haven't had to continuously justify our profession to employers who would very much like to automate our work and, at best, demote us to editors polishing up generated translations, and for many years before ai came for many other positions, at that
y'all telling me you've got sources in various other positions in development at big devs and pubs you can turn to for big stories and yet somehow can't figure out how to find people like me when the specialist sites haven't done the translating for you? i don't buy it
if you can be sympathetic to artists and voice actors' valid concerns about ai in addition to your own profession's work being used to train the technology wholesale, perhaps consider the optics of using that very same underlying technology to cover other kinds of stories, what that says about whose work is valued and whose is devalued by your editorial coverage, and that's without getting into the usual stuff about it being just plain sloppy and often unrepresentative of what was actually said to rely on machine translation
i get that money is tight, but i've worked with editors who get it right, so i know at least some of you understand what's at stake. you can't tell me that with all the ad revenue coming in from genshin and palworld guides that you can't afford to pay us for 10 minutes of our time to properly translate a tweet and maybe even give you a professional analysis of the context that would benefit the story. again, i just find that hard to believe.
