There's an AI manga """localization""" company getting dunked on in recent days for a variety of reasons by people who, y'know, actually translate shit for a living and one of the headline grabbing figures that they keep touting presumably to wow investors with how much money their AI will save is that each volume of conventionally translated manga supposedly costs $7000 to localize. It's a bullshit figure for a lot of reasons even I can discern as someone who doesn't work in manga, but coming from game localization, where that amount of money would be basically a rounding error in any decently sized project (and that's even on the ones without humane pay), I'm just like, "Oh, you sweet summer child, if $7000 per volume is enough to scare you off paying humans to do everything at $10 a volume, then stay in your lane and don't try to break into any other business."

Idiot goobers way out of their element once again just trying to part even stupider venture capitalists from their money at the end of the day while poisoning the well for the rest of us. News at 11.

I think that's a different company (I'm talking about Orange, Inc, who has a really surreal promotional manga involving low key horny anthropomorphized food I recommend checking out if you haven't, it's legit haunting), but I saw that anecdote and that's an incredible story for sure, ahaha. Genuinely nice to see an author actually have the wherewithal to not only stand up for their own series' localization, but actually have the chops to even make that business case. That industry sure seems like it could benefit from a lot more creators of that ilk in this day and age. 😩
