I'm reusing an 8bitdo Pro 2 as the PCB. I got it from Amber, and the PCB works well (only issue is the left stick doesn't work, but I won't be using that anyway). This gives me native compatibility with PC and Switch, and I'll probably need an adapter for PS5/Xbox. It also gives me an app to remap buttons and such.

I've purchased 13 buttons for the current draft: 12 small 24 mm ons and 1 30 mm, all Sanwa. Yes it's leverless!

Goal for the main build is acrylic top + wooden base.

Size and general layout is based off the HautePad T series, which I figured was my sweetspot for portability and usability on my lap.
Current progress is I have the buttons and finished the prototype layout to print on cardboard. I gotta get some cables and such and then I can slap it on a shoebox and do some test runs before commiting to the print job.
