
I co-run a video game cooperative called Studio Terranova with @mabbees.
fwiw, valve did mention two reasons for this change:
First, for developers to identify sensitive content that exists in their game so that customers can control the kinds of content they wish to see and not see when browsing the Steam store. [...]
Second, it provides Steam with more information to establish rating systems and content descriptors to display in the Steam store for customers in Brazil and Germany. [...]
i'm not entirely sure, but i'm guessing that valve intends to add abortion as a new filter for customers to use when browsing the steam store.

The first one (and part of the reason I added "abortion" as a content warning to this cohost, even) is controlled by the user themselves; which, I personally believe people should be able to control and filter the content they see.
But then I have to ask myself...why just abortion? Terranova has references to homophobia, conversion therapy and eating disorders, and all of those are potential things I imagine folks could want to filter out of their experience.
