I don’t often visit Asakusa because I have an impression of it being “a tourist spot” and as a generally feral person who enjoys walkable cities, I try to avoid high-density places.

I went last weekend and while it was just as crowded as I remembered, it emanated this busy old-school city charm that I’d forgotten. The east side of Tokyo still has Edo-period architecture—the long shopping malls, the statues outside small boutique stores that west Tokyo just doesn’t have. The sun was setting. We bought a goma manju (sesame seed bun) and lingered outside the shop watching tourists and Japanese families go by. As it got dark, we wandered around the side streets filled with old soba restaurants and kimono rental shops.

It started to rain. Neither of us had brought an umbrella. We ran to a nearby restaurant to take refuge and then went home once the rain let up.

Every day, I (re)discover magic.
